Ricardo Salinas Pliegos Retail Chain, Grupo Elektra, is now accepting Bitcoin
Elektra is a supermarket and banking chain owned by the conglomerate Grupo Salinas, owned by the third richest billionaire in Mexico, Ricardo Salinas Pliego. Salinas tweeted on Thursday:
The rumors are true. Elektra is the first (single) store in Mexico that allows you to shop with Bitcoin. I am very sorry to beat the competition again.
In addition, the retail chain is offering a 20% discount on some Bitcoin purchases, the billionaire confirmed on Twitter. The discount offer is only valid until December 31st.
Customers can use bitcoin to shop in Elektra physical stores as well as online, add the details of the website and that BTC Purchases are processed by the US crypto payment service provider Bitpay.
Salinas has been a long-time Bitcoin advocate. In June he said, “Me recommend the use of bitcoin ”, adding that he and his bank are“ working to be the first bank in Mexico to accept bitcoin ”. His bank, Banco Azteca, operates in Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru. It is also present in El Salvador, the country that made Bitcoin legal tender alongside the US dollar in September. The billionaire repeated in November: “Please buy Bitcoin now.”
The governor of the Bank of Mexico, Alejandro Diaz de Leon, has meanwhile warned against Bitcoin, stressing that the cryptocurrency is a high-risk investment and poor store of value due to its volatility.
