BlueWallet To Sunset Custodial Lightning Wallet Service
on-chainBitcoin-Wallets and self-custody Lightning-Wallets are not affected, according to a blog by the Bitcoin mobile app company.
BlueWallet, a BitcoinWallet with apps in both the iOS and Android stores, has announced that it will be retiring its Lightning wallet service for retention until April 30, 2023.
In a blog post, the company stated, “Today we are announcing that the Lightning node, Lndhub.io, where BlueWallet offers Lightning wallets to its users, is shutting down. While you can still withdraw your sats, creating new or topping up existing Lightning wallets on the LndHub node is no longer possible.”
The post goes on to urge users to remove funds from their BlueWallet Lightning wallets as soon as possible. It also clarifies that regular BlueWallet bitcoin wallets are not affected by this change, nor are self-custodial Lightning wallets – where users connect to their own lndhub.
“Lndhub started out as a weekend experiment with a new edge technology called Lightning Network that was hardly used at the time,” the blog explains. “Today, with the availability of more mainstream services offering scalable solutions, Lndhub has served its purpose in its current form.”
Users can still access Lndhub as a software and self-hosted solution and sign in through BlueWallet or other software that uses the LndHubAPIspecification supported, connect to their own LndHub.
The post concludes on an upbeat note, saying, “This may sound like bad news, but it essentially means that BlueWallet will only support self-custody solutions going forward. This is good for Bitcoin and BlueWallet users.”
