British Football Club Oxford City To Introduce Bitcoin Payments (Report) – Crypto News Aktuell

One of Britain’s oldest football clubs – Oxford City – will reportedly allow fans to buy match tickets, food and drinks in Bitcoin instead of buying in fiat currency. The initiative will see the light of day after a multi-year partnership between the team and digital exchange CoinCorner.

Over the years, the football industry has dealt with the world of cryptocurrency interacts. Popular players like Neymar, David Beckham, Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho have expressed interest in the sector, while other clubs, similar to Oxford City, are using digital currencies as a means of payment.

According to reporting by BBC, Oxford City has partnered with crypto platform CoinCorner to become the latest football club to accept the primary cryptocurrency as an alternative method for matchday payments and the purchase of food and beverages.

The move is expected to be put into action next Saturday when the club take on Eastbourne Borough at their home ground – Court Place Farm. As part of the multi-year agreement with CoinCorner, the stadium will be renamed RAW Charging Stadium and the company’s logo will be embroidered onto the back of players’ jerseys.

Oxford City’s director of football, Justin Merritt, noted that it is vital for the team to leverage the latest innovations such as bitcoin to “act as a self-sustaining club” and reflect on its long-term strategies.

“It’s not mandatory for people to engage with our new technology, but over time we believe paying with bitcoin will become the new normal in English football,” said Merritt.

CoinCorner Chief Executive Officer Daniel Scott also commented on the move, believing that other football teams will follow Oxford City’s crypto path:

“It is gratifying to see the club become the first to introduce bitcoin payments in the National League. We believe this move will set a trend across all non-league and football league divisions as digital currency establishes itself as the new normal for sports fans and event-goers across the UK.”

Many football icons have already jumped on the digital asset bandwagon in one form or another. For example, the Brazilian striker Neymar bought two non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection.
