The professional football team based in Catalonia, Spain – RCD Espanyol – will allow fans to buy match tickets, merchandise and food and beverages in several cryptocurrencies to buy. The offer will be available with the start of the next La Liga season (August 2022).
The first in La Liga to embrace crypto
Digital assets and the football industry have developed a relatively strong bond in recent months. Numerous clubs from all parts of the world announced partnerships with crypto companies, introduced exchanges as sponsors or accepted the asset class as a payment method.
However, Spain’s top football division – La Liga – has not been as heavily involved in the sector. According to a recent press release, this trend will change this summer, when RCD Espanyol will allow its supporters to buy tickets, in-game food and drink and merchandise in Bitcoin, Ethereum and other digital assets.
To this end, the club partnered with Crypto Snack – a financial application based in Barcelona and Estonia. It has a native iGaming token called SNACK, which is listed on many major exchanges. The asset is added to the offer so fans can use it as payment.
Mao Ye Wu, CEO of RCD Espanyol, believes the collaboration will bring “tremendous benefits both on and off the field” and provide additional opportunities for football fans to attend a game.
“With this step, we are becoming pioneers in a field that is not the future, but already the present,” he emphasized.
For his part, Crypto Snack’s CEO – Stuart Morrison – said his company was honored to work with one of the most popular football clubs in Spain. He believes the venture will provide Espanyol fans with a “fun and efficient way to support their team through the use of SNACK and other cryptocurrencies.”
Tigres said yes to bitcoin
Another football giant that has allowed fans to buy passes for matches in crypto is Mexico’s Tigres. To make this possible, the team has partnered with Latin American digital asset exchange Bitso.
Daniel Vogel – co-founder and CEO of the platform – argued that the partnership with Tigres will increase the daily use of cryptocurrencies at sporting events and “thereby expanding their use as a payment method for any type of event”.
The football club’s president – Mauricio Culebro Galván – hinted that this might not be the last cryptocurrency effort initiated by the team:
“Tigres continued to look to the future, and with Bitso new initiatives will surely come to continue offering better services.”
