Sunshine Tour – a professional golf tournament taking place in South and East Africa – has partnered with Luno to offer participants cryptocurrencies to bring closer. In addition to prizes in fiat currency, the best golfers will receive awards in Bitcoin.
BTC arrives at the golf course
The primary cryptocurrency is finding its way through the sports industry. The most recent example of this kind came from the prestigious golf championship – Sunshine Tour. The tournament, held in numerous African countries such as Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Tanzania and South Africa, will award around $31,000 worth of bitcoins to the golfer who finishes first.
The runner-up gets about $12,000 in BTC, while the third-place finisher gets the $6,000 asset.
Sunshine Tour’s partner is the cryptocurrency exchange Luno. Winners will have their bitcoin rewards transferred to their Luno accounts. Marius Reitz – general manager of the exchange – said his company’s goal is to give people access to a “new financial system fit for the digital age”.
He further opined that the crypto opportunity could be beneficial for professional golfers who have “a very different way of thinking about risk and reward, both on and off the golf course”:
“Their careers are constantly evolving and it aligns perfectly with our vision to put the power of crypto in the hands of everyone by making it safe and easy to buy, store and learn about crypto.”
Bitcoin prices in other sports
The leading digital asset has been used as a financial stimulus in numerous sports in recent years. In 2021, India-based crypto exchange Bitbns pledged to award $2,700 worth of digital assets to each local Tokyo Olympics champion. Silver medalists should receive $1,250 in crypto, while bronze medalists should receive $675. The cryptocurrencies in question were Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Another sport where BTC is very popular is the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Last month, the organization partnered with CryptoCom to introduce the new “Fan Bonus of the Night” awarded to athletes in the digital asset.
Payouts range from $30,000 for first place, $20,000 for second place and $10,000 for third place. Fans can vote on the UFC Pay-Per-View channel and decide which athlete deserves to be placed at the top.
Dana White – President of the Championship – described CryptoCom as the “best partner” the company has ever had:
“They are constantly coming up with new ideas on how we can work together to connect with fans. This new Fan Bonus of the Night is a great way to get fans more excited about our events while also rewarding fighters for their badass performances.”
