Tencent offers metaverse building services for Asian markets – Metaverse

Tencent, the Chinese software and technology company, has announced its Metaverse suite of services aimed at Asian markets. The company announced that it will revamp its media offering with its new “Metaverse-in-a-Box” proposal, which aims to ease the task of building virtual worlds for third-party companies.

Tencent focuses on offering third-party metaverse tools

Tencent, one of China’s largest tech companies, has revealed its hand on the future of its Metaverse strategy. The company announced that it will focus on offering “metaverse-in-a-box” services to its customers through its cloud division. This move, which complements the range of media services launched last year, aims to ease the task of developing virtual worlds for Tencent customers.

The tools introduced by Tencent are reportedly being used by gaming, media, entertainment and retail companies to build and design these metaverse spaces for various purposes. Tencent aims to offer the services to customers in Asian markets, particularly Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, which the company forecasts will see significant growth in this area.

Poshu Yeung, senior vice president of Tencent Cloud International stated:

Now that more and more companies are interested in exploring and adapting to an efficient, transparent digital future, we are willing to use our technical experience in gaming, audio and video to provide technical support for Web3 and work with Industry partners come together to deliver a more immersive experience and foster a better Web3 ecosystem.

A turn to the software

Tencent’s new plans indicate a shift from pursuing a Metaverse hardware business to focusing on what the company is known for: software development. While the company announced the creation of its extended reality unit in June 2022 – which would reportedly develop native hardware for experiencing virtual worlds – recent reports indicate the cessation of those initiatives and the dissolution of this group.

Tencent dismissed reports of the said disbanding of that department, but said it was making adjustments to its staff due to a change in plans. Other Chinese companies are also in the process of making cuts in their Metaverse-related divisions and groups, such as Bytedance, which is the creator of the Pico line of virtual reality (VR) headsets.
