The parent company of the world’s largest open-source online encyclopedia is closing the book on accepting crypto assets as donations.
In a long page documenting the process of debate and voting in its community, Wikipedia announces that it asks the Wikimedia Foundation not to make donations in the form of cryptocurrencies accept more.
According to Wikipedia, almost 400 users took part in the debate process, which lasted between mid-January and mid-April. The overall vote among incumbent users was 232 to 94, meaning that 71.17% chose to stop accepting digital assets
Key arguments in favor of the measure, which would end further acceptance of crypto donations, include de facto advocacy for virtual assets and environmental concerns.
The original proposal bills cryptocurrencies as “extremely risky investments” that have only recently gained popularity among retailers, and says that if they accept them, Wikipedia will “make the use of investments and technologies that are predatory in nature consistent.” would”.
